2048 Practice with Undo

Play 2048 with undo to compare moves on a classic 4×4 board. Restore a previous board and score, try another direction and learn without mixing practice scores with classic games.

Undo your last move

Undo restores the board and score before the last valid move. The next valid move uses the restored random state, so repeating the same action produces the same result.

Learn from a choice

Compare two directions and notice how they change empty space and merge opportunities. You can step back through up to 100 valid moves in the current session.

A separate mode

Practice is not a hacked game and does not unlock arbitrary tiles. Classic mode has no undo. Saved practice games restore the board, but undo history clears after reload.

How to practice with undo

  1. Make a valid move using the arrows, WASD, swipe or direction buttons.
  2. Notice which empty cells and matching pairs the move creates.
  3. Choose Undo last move to restore the previous board and score.
  4. Try another direction and compare the result.

Repeating the same move after undo restores the same random sequence, making a comparison useful. You can revisit up to 100 valid moves in the current session; reloading clears this history. Use the corner strategy and tile-order examples as exercises.

A repeatable practice exercise

Choose a board with at least two legal directions. Before moving, predict which pairs will merge and where the largest tile will end up. Make one move, note the result, undo it, then try the other direction. Count the empty cells and check whether the next matching pair can meet.

Undo restores the random-generator state as well as the board and score. Replaying the same direction from the same state produces the same result. A different direction may place the next tile elsewhere because it changes the available cells; you are comparing that complete outcome, not forcing an identical spawn location.

The interactive row examples isolate the merge itself if you want to learn the rule before studying random spawns.

Why Undo can be unavailable

There is nothing to undo before your first valid move. A direction that leaves the board unchanged does not add a history entry. A new game or a page reload clears undo history, even if functional storage restores the current board. Only the most recent 100 valid moves in the current session can be restored.

Undo restores the earlier score, but the best-score display can retain a higher score reached earlier in that practice run. It is a local record, not a verified leaderboard result.
